| Day 15 Valdez (5/28)
On the drive into town we went through a spectacular gorge with waterfalls on both sides of the road. The cliffs seemed to be at least a thousand feet up, with falls cascading down their faces. As soon as we emerged from the gorge the weather turned rainy as we were on the seaward side of the mountains. While in Valdez we visited the museum, which was very nice and currently displaying a quilt show. We enjoyed seeing a fully restored fire engine that was used to pump water, and was drawn by horses. They had lots of gold rush era photos too. On Saturday (after we leave) they will be opening a new exhibit that will be a model of the (pre-earthquake) 1964 (old) Valdez. The town was condemned and all the people moved to this new site. We peeked in at the model builders working. All they lack is a train going through the town to have a great layout. We ate some halibut and got some food supplies. |
